  • We tested the new ARTstor mobile version (http://library.artstor.org) on the iPad. (More info: http://help.artstor.org/wiki/index.php/ARTstor_Mobile)** While it is not a replacement for the full featured database (lack of advanced search and ability to create image groups), it is useful as a study tool with its mobile-only flashcard view.
    • We will publicize it in various ways (request link be added to CUL mobile site; add to libguides and the Visual Resources page; contact faculty directly; We Recommend)
  • A small working group was formed to work on Luna Access policies (Danielle, Mira, Kaila, Susette, Matt, Eli, and Peter Hirtle as guest).
    • We are currently reviewing all collections in Luna with the goal of expanding access consistently across collections and user groups.
    • We will write and post usage statements -general/collection-wide, collection-specific, and image-specific
  • We agreed to consolidate listservs. We'll eliminate cul-imagepassword-l@list.cornell.edu and use only vrhelp-l@cornell.edu.
    • Changes will need to be made on Luna (Mira), Visual Resources page (Kaila), and libguides (Kaila, Susette, Maaike, Martha).
  • New beta version of Shared Shelf will be released Jan. 15. (Liz)
    • There will be three test collections for the cataloging tool (Japanese woodblocks, Uris Art, and Asia rare). Other test collections can be added in the Spring.
    • Liz will give a demo in January or February.
    • The Metadata Working Group is planning on a forum in March or April. VRWG would like to co-sponsor the forum.

  • ALA report

Kaila and Liz attended the ACRL Image Resources Interest Group meeting. The meeting included two presentations: Barbara Natanson at the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division discussed their new online catalog (www.loc.gov/pictures) and Nicole Finzer at Northwestern University described their efforts to create their own web-based image management system and digitize interdisciplinary content.

Kaila is also a member of the ACRL IRIG Visual Literacy Standards Task Force, which was formed in April 2010. The goal of the task force is to create visual literacy standards in line with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Denise Hattwig (chair), University of Washington; Joanna Burgess, Reed College; and Ann Medaille, University of Nevada, Reno are the other task force members. At ALA we had an open meeting to define visual literacy in the context of an interdisciplinary, information-literacy-based environment. After a discussion of the standards creation process, we worked with 12 participants (a range of librarians from media studies to visual curators) to draft a definition of visual literacy. We are encouraging participation and feedback from the community via the blog, http://acrlvislitstandards.wordpress.com.
