  • ALA report

Kaila and Liz attended the ACRL Image Resources Interest Group meeting. The meeting included two presentations: Barbara Natanson at the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division discussed their new online catalog (www.loc.gov/pictures) and Nicole Finzer at Northwestern University described their efforts to create their own web-based image management system and digitize interdisciplinary content.

Kaila is also a member of the ACRL IRIG Visual Literacy Standards Task Force, which was formed in April 2010. The goal of the task force is to create visual literacy standards in line with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards. Denise Hattwig (chair), University of Washington; Joanna Burgess, Reed College; and Ann Medaille, University of Nevada, Reno are the other task force members. At ALA we had an open meeting to define visual literacy in the context of an interdisciplinary, information-literacy-based environment. After a discussion of the standards creation process, we worked with 12 participants (a range of librarians from media studies to visual curators) to draft a definition of visual literacy. We are encouraging participation and feedback from the community via the blog, http://acrlvislitstandards.wordpress.com.

March 2010

Agenda & Notes:

In attendance: Danielle Mericle, Kaila Bussert, Susette Newberry, Maaike Oldemans, Mira Basara, Barb Morley, Boris Michev

Webfeat transition feedback
https://confluence.cornell.edu/display/VRWG/WebFeat Transition Feedback|../../../../../../../../../display/VRWG/WebFeat+Transition+Feedback||\

We need to determine strategies for various scenarios, including the possibility of Webfeat going away without a replacement.  This is seeming

more likely, so we will then need to determine 1) if they can search off of ARTstor or Luna, and 2), which one to search from.  We need to gather

usage statistics on both to make decision.

Demo of Luna upgrade  -Will plan for next time

Preparing for ARTStor migration-- Primarily an issue with HFJ- will discuss at future meetings.

ARTStor Statistics (possibly)-- Danielle contacting ARTStor for statistics on use

February 2010

AGENDA:

In attendance: Danielle Mericle, Kaila Bussert, Mira Basara, Matt Conway, Boris Michev, Barb Morley, Liz Muller, Maaike Oldemans, Meghan Reiff, Glen Wiley

1. Webfeat replacement --feedback on the image searching piece of Webfeat (Jeremy Cusker, Webfeat Transition Team)

We will provide feedback to the transition team by April 15th:
https://confluence.cornell.edu/display/VRWG/WebFeat+Transition+Feedback|../../../../../../../../../display/VRWG/WebFeat+Transition+Feedback|\

We agreed that we want image resources to continue to maintain a primary space on the library's discovery system.

Some options to consider:

  • Search box for Images could search ARTstor --question for Rick on feasibility
  • Browse Image Collections could go to Digital Collections list

2. Luna Test upgrade-- details (annotations & other added functionality)

Currently the export size is 4. With the upgrade we could allow export of larger sizes. We agreed that Mira would use the older browser policies by collection to determine appropriate export size.

3. Categories discussion -- finding the best category fields for each collection

Matt suggested that we need to rethink the mapping of HFJ collection. Liz will revisit by collection and map for what is most useful by collection (instead of across Luna platform).

4. ARTstor forum -- March 8

The forum is on Shared Shelf organized by Dean Krafft, Danielle Mericle, and Glen Wiley.
Monday, March 8, 2010 from 11am -12pm in Olin 106G.

5. Flickr -- stats and updates (Liz)

Political Americana is now in Flickr
Future addition: Icelandic collection

6. Stats of VR use

ARTstor --Martha
Flickr --Dianne Dietrich speaking with Adam Chandler about adding to new log system.
Luna --Mira reported that patrons are still using the old browser; Mira will ask Rick if redirect to new browser is working.

7. Agenda items for next meeting:

Demo of Luna upgrade  (note: HFJ annotations on production, not on test server)
Webfeat transition feedback
