As the Sedimentation Team is working on a new project, much of the research so far has been in design. I worked with Yiwen to design the tube flocculator so that the energy dissipation rate is approximately but does not exceed 10 mW/kg, the scouring velocity is sufficient to prevent settling out, the flow is laminar, and the residence time is such that flocs of reasonable size are producedto produce reasonably size flocs for our sedimentation tank. The flocculator was designed for an energy dissipation rate to encourage floc formation, for a sufficient scouring velocity and laminar flow, and for a residence time to produce flocs of a predicted size. Much of the design work has also included contributing to a Research Rationale with figures drawn to scale, the drawing of figures, and working together to create a determine materials list for our new set-up.
