  2. Scope of our task
    1. Definition of internationalization
    2. Working with programs that support international students here
    3. working with programs that support students' experiences abroad.

2a. Our definition ideas:

  • broad term that encompasses teaching, research by UG, GR & Faculty, etc., that crosses borders
  • does it mean physical mobility/transference to an other location (outside of the us).  At a future, technology could play a greater role
  • element of cultural exchange; experiencing interaction, but does that mean interaction with international students here AND abroad?

Our Working Definition:  from the GLOBAL CU website: https://global.cornell.edu/impact/global-cornell-initiative

Our primary mission is academic: to help students develop skills that prepare them to move successfully and responsibly through the world. We work with colleges, schools, and units to increase access and opportunities so that 100 percent of Cornell students have viable options for global learning, whether in Ithaca, New York City, or abroad.

  • implied in this statement is the faculty that conducts research in international locations and involves students.

2b/c. Our Task

Start with GLOBAL Cornell website and identify the following points from the list of "resources" (links) at bottom of webpage of CU Cornell (see list of links below):

Each of us takes three links and puts information in Box: https://cornell.box.com/s/96encymgv3isgf6zf1oz98uio9uj2nme

  1. what they do - program description; if dates include
  2. who they support (e.g., UG, GR, professional,. etc.) & what Colleges/ Departments/Majors & numbers/
  3. main contact/office/key personnel
  4. library involvement/presence.

Action Items for next meeting

  • share with rest of Intl Task Force the Global Cornell website to find out what we are all doing ; areas of overlap & gap areas
  • Gaby find another meeting time in the next two weeks: Oct 17am (if not on 10/18 in the pm). & then every two weeks.
  • by next meeting have explored ONE link & shared info in Box

MEETING  October 19, 2017

Amy, Erin, Gaby, Patrick.

To keep in mind moving forward:
  • When we report out to external stakeholders, be sure to take a close look at job titles, etc to be sure that all factions of CUL/CU are represented accurately
  • Focus on who it is that we (CUL) need to reach out to within each department/program
  • Perhaps use the insights that we gain for recommendations for CUL internationalization moving forward.  For example, in regards to CU abroad, should we approach library involvement in a broad, global scale as opposed to targeting myriad specific programs within.
  • Keep the CUL/alumni relationship in mind for CUL promotion – e.g. alumni access to library resources
  • Alumni relations at Law: historical projects, continuing ed courses for alumni during reunion
  • If CUL subgroup is not looking at college level for international initiatives, we should incorporate this into our information sleuthing
  • Remember to consider Cornell Tech
  • Keep in mind that students may go abroad unofficially (e.g. without Cornell support or outside of Cornell channels)

Agenda item for Nov 2 meeting with larger group  (meeting is now moved to Nov 14. gc10/31)

  • Talk about how to organize information so that we can combine it cohesively with CUL subgroup

Action items for Nov 7 meeting:

  • Read through information that we have created about each international program
  • Think how to best share this information in a concise way
  • Amy will ask Thomas whether CUL subgroup is looking at the college level.
  • Colleges to investigate
    • Amy – Law, TECH
    • Gaby – A&S, AAP, ENG (let us know if you need help Gaby!)
    • Erin – CALS, HE, Vet
    • Patrick – ILR,Business (SHA, JGSM), InfoSci
