Immediate Tasks

  • Caulk Pipe
  • Caps - need ½ diameter caps
  • Resetting Tube Flocculator- find configuration that does not pinch tube

Tube Flocculator

Create floc profile for tube flocculator (9/26/08)

  • The turbidity of the flocculator will be measured at various points along the flocculator.
  • A profile similar to the one measured for the tapered flocculator will be made. Gtheta for maximum floc size will be determined.

Measure settling velocity with and without upflow (10/24/08)

  • Construct settling columns. One will have an upflow velocity that is equivalent to the tanks upflow velocity. One will have still water.
  • The settling columns will be used to determine how floc size and density affects the critical terminal velocity of the flocs.

Sedimentation Tank

Construct new weirs for the plant leveling tank that allow for parallel tanks to run at flow of 100, 120 and 70 m/day. (9/19/08)

Try to form floc blanket without lamella in second tank to determine if pipe inlet is interfering with blanket formation. (10/5/08)

  • This will be done by running both sedimentation tanks until a floc blanket forms.
  • The turbidity of the effluent will be measured to see what, if any, difference there is between the tanks.

Form a floc blanket with lamella in the tank (10/17/08)

  • To establish whether or not the there is minimum required tank depth below the lamella for blanket formation.
  • Determine how close the blanket can get to bottom of lamella before performance is affected.
  • If a sludge blanket cannot be formed with the current tank configuration: 1) what is the minimum height needed and 2) how short can the lamella (vertical distance) before they are ineffective.

Test lamella spacing (11/5/08)

  • How close is too close? The baffle spacing will be varied to determine the optimal baffle spacing. This will be done with and without a floc blanket Compare data.

An overall goal of the sed tank is to determine if it's a good to have a sludge blanket and to determine the restricting parameters for sedimention tanks. i.e. minimum lamella spacing, minimum depth for blanket and minimum lamella length.

Tapered Flocculation

If time allows and alternative parameters for G and Gtheta are determined by the tube flocculator experiments, the Pilot Plant Team will investigate new baffle configurations for optimized flocculation .
