Overview

During the COVID-19 shutdown, this may be a good opportunity to become familiar with and continue your work remotely with some of the CNF's great software tools. Please keep in mind when working remotely that software licensing seats are shared among the whole CNF community. And some software is only available for academic research.

Users of LEdit should note that the Linux version behaves somewhat differently than the Windows version.

Because CNF Thin is a linux based solution, users unfamiliar with the Linux commandline should review the Linux commandline cheat sheet.

Getting Started

To get started, please contact CNF Computing . Please include your name, NetID or GuestID, institution, CNF project, academic or commercial purpose, and which software.

Howto Login

The below will not work until your netid/guestid is authorized by CNF Computing.

You will remotely login to the CNF Thin service via VPN using a special CNF Thin group VPN pool, RS-CNF-VPN-Thin .

  1. Download the ThinLinc client for your operating system.
  2. Download the Cisco AnyConnect client for your operating system.
  3. Connect to the Cornell NetID or GuestID VPN
    1. GuestID users use the Cornell GuestID VPN service to connect to RS-CNF-VPN-Thin
    2. NetID users use the Cornell NetID VPN service to RS-CNF-VPN-Thin
  4. In the installed ThinLinc client, set your preferred screen size:
    1. Click "Options"
    2. Click the "Screen" tab
    3. Choose your preferred screen size
    4. Make sure "Resize remote session to the local window" is checked
  5. With the installed ThinLinc client, connect to
    Server: desktop-k.cnf.cornell.edu
    Username: netid_or_guestid
Password: your netid or guestid password
  6. To disconnect your session, press 'F8' and choose "Disconnect" - just as you would from a CNF Thinstation in the facility (sessions will also auto terminate in the same time frame as if accessing CNF Thin at the facility)
  7. Disconnect the VPN.
