During the Fall 2008 semester I have worked on the flocculation tank research team. Most of the research and analysis has been completed jointly with Jesse Prager. We meet twice a week in Swanson Computer lab. We have researched and compared on different turbulent models link, developed UDF function to extract effective G-theta value link, created multiple geometries link, and created automatics scripts to generate meshes in GAMBIT (me) and run cases in FLUENT (Jesse) link.  We are also taking optimization class in order to better learn the optimization techniques.

Additionally, since the mid-term, the flocculation tank geometry has been optimized based on uniformity of energy dissipation, performance parameters have been calculated, sensitivity to Reynolds number has been determined for the optimal geometry and the profile of energy dissipation has been categorized for different geometries. The above results have mainly been a collaborative effort.

I have done some background literature research regarding what turbulence model is appropriate for flow with high adverse pressure gradient and high strain rate (K-e realizable is probably the best model for such flow). Along with Wenqi Yi, I have also represented AguaClara in presenting the conference during IBE regional conference.  In general, both of us have done our best and spent a fairly amount of time in order to contribute to the team as much as possible.
