Morocelí is a small town in the department of El Paraíso in southeastern Honduras. Their water system has just under 900 active users or households, so it serves about 4,500 people. The system is administered by a local water board with representatives elected by the community.
Construction of their 16 L/s plant began in March, 2014 with funding from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the municipality of Morocelí. It was completed in October, 2014 and was inaugurated in January, 2016.
In January, 2015, students from Cornell visited the completed plant and met representatives of the municipality and the local water assembly. Below, Civil Engineers Santiago Garcia and Aminta Nuñez from our implementation partner, Agua Para el Pueblo, describe the design and construction process. After receiving the hydraulic design from AguaClara's automated design tool, they work with an AguaClara engineer and an architect to draw detailed two-dimensional plans for each component of the plant.
