Summer 2009 Contributions

 I am a member of the Design Team, working on the vertical flocculation tank. Our first task was to move the ports that connect the channels from the top to the bottom of the tank walls. From a structural perspective, this is more sound as it allows those that build the plant to tie the walls together at the top of the wall.  Since the sedimentation tank is drawn before the flocculation tank, how the water gets out of the floc tank is determined by how it gets into the sed tank.  We moved this exit port so that the water could flow between the tanks. Once the ports between the channels had been moved, the baffles had to be adjusted to accommodate this new water pattern (i.e. up-down instead of down-up). In the last channel, this pattern is reversed since the exit port to the sed tank is at the top of the tank wall; the baffle lengths also had to be reassigned for this last channel.
There is also a new section of code in the floctank script which draws slots for the baffles to be slipped into. The baffles are placed after the tank is built (during construction) so the slots are drawn from the top of each wall. The depth of these slots into the floctank walls is now a user-defined input.
For certain flow rates, there were often baffles in the last channel that were positioned in the space for the exit port. We changed this logic so that the baffles are no longer interfering with the flow of water and are evenly spaced. This logic differs depending on the number of baffles (one or two) that fall in the port space: If there is just one baffle, the exit port space (plus a lip S.FlocChannel) is left at that end of the tank, and the baffles are re-spaced in the remaining length. If there are two baffles in the exit port space, two are removed (to keep the even number) and re-spaced along the whole channel evenly.

Summer 2010 Contributions

I am a member of the Design team, working on adding the Materials List to the Documentation files. This section of the Design Specifications document includes pertinent information about the entrance tank, flocculator, and sedimentation tank. In each section, practical resources such as the volume of concrete, number, length, and nominal diameter of pipes, and number of valves and adapters was added. I also added a switch that only displays the number of plastic baffles when appropriate (i.e. never in a horizontal flocculator).
Additionally, I changed the Materials List code to return the correct amount of ferrous cement needed for the baffles only when necessary (i.e. not when plastic baffles are used).
