ANC CONTROL

FILTRATION

OBJECTIVE

Estimate the amount of lime left over after an experiment so that we can better account for where the lime is ending up. When tap water is used, calcium carbonate precipitate forms over the course of the experiment. Calcium Carbonate is heavier than lime and the mass of remaining solids will be affected.

PROCEDURE

1. Collect water at the end of each running.
2. Separate lime from water using a filter paper.
3. Dehydrate lime following the procedure described in "lime dehydration".
4. Weigh dehydrated lime and compare the solution with the amount added at the beginning or the experiment.

RESULTS

Collection of water is a difficult task since there is not enough space at the outlet to place an appropriate container, in the collection process; the team lost a significant amount of water and lime. Filtration process takes several hours (around 5h). Because of the difficulties of recovering the leftover solids from the apparatus, the team could not estimate the amount of lime. However, the team plans to repeat the test.
