Spring 2013 Contributions
Beginning of the semester:
As a part of the arsenic research team, I hope to help conduct a literature review on how to introduce, handle and dispose of arsenic and how arsenic might interact with the AguaClara system. We aim to produce a manual that would inform future AguaClara researchers working on arsenic about lab protocol and areas for further basic research as well as suggestions for modifications that might improve AguaClara's ability to remove arsenic.
End of the semester:
As a part of the arsenic research team, I found and summarized/synthesized information about arsenic and its removal that may be relevant for future AguaClara research and design of arsenic treatment systems. We covered a range of topics: lab protocol, arsenic's chemical interactions with other substances, raw water composition, arsenic removal methods (both coagulation and non-coagulation based), oxidation pretreatment, arsenic measurement methods, online arsenic measurement systems, data collection methods, theories of arsenic-coagulant interactions, design considerations, and a checklist for the next team. Although I admit I should have spent more time, I hope we have made a good start to AguaClara's arsenic research program by gathering what researchers might want to know and is already known from the research of others. I further hope that we will effectively communicate what we have gathered to future teams through our final report and Mathcad file and that these documents will be helpful references that will assist future teams in planning and running arsenic experiments.
