Network Connectivity Program (NCP): ST Olin and Baker Lab

WARNINGS and status updates regarding the phone and network wiring being upgraded in ST Olin Research Wing and Baker Lab. (PSB already has a modern network).

WARNING and status update, 12/8/2012

WARNING: Temporary daytime downtime for networks and phones in ST Olin, now through 12/22/12.

WHEN and WHERE: Now, and over the next two weeks (12/10-12/22/12), in ST Olin. Changes are expected mostly in the mornings, until about 1pm each day.

WHAT: The downtime related to the previously announced "cutting-over" of all computers, printers, and phones from the old wiring to the new wiring.

IMPACT: Temporary daytime DOWNTIME will occur as a result of the transition to new wiring. Specifically, we anticipate that:

  • phone downtime will be kept at under half an hour.
  • network downtime should be under a few minutes.
  • all phones and network devices are working correctly by the end of each work day.

For ST Olin, we will work "floor-by-floor" to help concentrate CRCF staff's efforts.

Please be aware that a large number of network devices, primarily printers, will be changing network addresses. This will require making configuration changes on each computer to re-establish connectivity to the printers. Chemistry IT (CRCF) will attempt to provide as much information and direct assistance as possible to research group liaisons on the changes. And we will assist any user that needs assistance during and after the transition.

This transition will depend on each group's "group liaison" (when available) to assist CRCF staff in determining if users are having problems. We will naturally be attentive to get to any problems reported as quickly as possible. However, depending on the number of unanticipated problems, we recognize that we may not be as responsive as we normally can be.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we, together, work though any transition connectivity problems.  Thank you!

STATUS UPDATE

ST Olin project status:

  • Over the next two weeks (12/10-12/22/12), CIT and Chemistry IT will be transitioning computers and phones from the old wiring to the new wiring.
  • As of December 6th, 2012, CIT has turned on approximately 60 new RedRover wireless access points in ST Olin. This should provide 100% RedRover coverage in ST Olin for all devices. Chemistry IT has started to remove our wireless networks from ST Olin and we hope in the next week to remove all Chemistry IT wireless devices from the building and finish the transition of users to using RedRover networks.

Baker Lab project status:

  • At this point, users in Baker Lab should not worry about seeing any transition changes. No changes affecting computers, printers, or phones are planned for Baker Lab until the very last week of January at the earliest. We will work with the appropriate research groups and administrative offices on the transition schedule once we get closer to when we can make the transition.
  • As of 12/8/12, CIT's contractors are still running the necessary wiring to all appropriate locations in Baker Lab. The contractors hope to complete the wiring by the second week of January, if not sooner. Once the contractors are finish, CIT will do their work to prepare the new wiring and will coordinate with Chemistry IT to transition users and computers to the new wiring.

As If you have any questions or concerns during this project and transition, please do not hesitate to stop by our office in 250 Baker Lab, call us at 607-255-6278, or email us at crcf//AT//cornell.edu.
