Member Advisory Board

Cornell University Library (CUL) holds the overall administrative and financial responsibility for arXiv's operation and development, with guidance from its Member Advisory Board (MAB) and its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) (see arXiv Governance Model). Based on the arXiv's operating principles, MAB represents participating institutions' interests and advises CUL on issues related to repository management and development, standards implementation, interoperability, development priorities, business planning, and outreach and advocacy. Representation on MAB is reserved for libraries, research institutions, laboratories, and foundations that are members of arXiv and that contribute to the financial support of the service. The MAB bylaws detail the goals, composition, operation, and election of the Board.

Composition of MAB

MAB will have 13 voting members in three categories:

1. Contributing Organizations

Eight voting members from 72 Contributing Organizations, elected through an election process.

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Theoretical Physics, Sweden, Tommy Ohlsson, Professor (4-year term)

Tommy Ohlsson is a full professor in theoretical physics at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. His research field is theoretical particle physics, particularly neutrino physics and physics beyond the so-called Standard Model. He is an author of around 90 scientific publications (most of them are available on arXiv) and one textbook "Relativistic Quantum Physics" published at Cambridge University Press. Recently, he has joined the debate about Open Access publishing, especially focusing on the "green" arXiv model (see Nature 489, 367; 2012). He has also written a popular science text about the theory of special relativity at Nobelprize.org.

Los Alamos National Laboratory, US, Carol Hoover, Digital Information Resources Manager (4-year term)

Carol has been the Digital Collections Librarian at LANL for over 10 yrs. She understands core science areas/R&D at LANL and actively seeks to integrate OA journals into the Library collections and champions OA with LANL researchers. She has been a very active member of the SCOAP3 Technical Working Group, and helped developed the specifications for the tender, and is now working with DOE to orchestrate reductions/redirections for SCOAP3. She has served on several publisher Library Advisory Boards and has a strong and deep working knowledge of publisher business models, issues in scholarly publishing, and budgeting & business practices across federal government libraries. She received a 2012 LANL Distinguished Performance Award for her work setting up a DOE complex-wide licensing model for subscription-based content.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US, Diane Geraci, Associate Director for Information Resources(4-year term)

Diane Geraci has over 25 years of experience in higher education with solid experience developing and leading research and data services, creating and managing digital repositories, building digital and print collections, administering budgets, and shaping trends in scholarly communication. Currently, she is Associate Director for Information Resources on the senior leadership team of the MIT Libraries with responsibility for collections strategy and management, curation and preservation services, digital publications and repositories, archives, and the Libraries' Office of Scholarly Publishing and Licensing. Prior to her appointment at MIT in 2008, she served as Librarian for the Social Sciences at Harvard College Library; held joint appointments as the Director of Science Libraries at the University of Michigan and Faculty Associate at the Inter-university Consortium of Political and Social Research (ICPSR); and held various positions at the UK Data Archive, University of Essex, and Binghamton University Libraries. Most recently Diane has served on the ACM Library Advisory Board, arXiv Election Committee, arXiv Interim Member Advisory Board, IEEE Library Advisory Council, North East Research Libraries Program Council Executive Committee, ORCID Board, and ORCID Business Working Group. Diane holds a master's degree in anthropology and a master's in library and information science, both from the University at Buffalo.

National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, Zhixiong Zhang, Assistant Director of National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Zhixiong Zhang is a Assistant Director and the Head of Information Systems Department, National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was a member of arXiv Interim Member Advisory Board from June 2012 to October 2012. And now he is the convener of arXiv.org China Service Group and the operator of arXiv China mirror site. The arXiv.org China Service Group is set up on Oct 22, 2012. The Goal of the group is to promote arXiv activities in China, to provide training services of arXiv to Chinese users, to channel user feedback on the services and development of arXiv.org, to provide necessary input and cooperative efforts in further development of arXiv.org. Zhixiong Zhang also is a standing committee member of IFLA (International Federation of Library Associations) IT Section. He is the deputy head of Academic Committee for Digital Library Research and Development of the Library Society of China. He is expert at digital library, preservation repository, knowledge organization, OA and OSS. He published about 100 research papers on related topics.

University of Melbourne, Australia, Philip G. Kent, University Librarian (2-year term)

Philip's 30 year career in libraries includes the CSIRO, Australia's national science agency and a variety of universities. A major achievement was the creation of the largest locally loaded full text science library collection in Australia. During that time he enjoyed collaborations with libraries at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Max Planck Society. He represented CSIRO on the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI). The University of Melbourne ranks as Australia's top research intensive university. It is one of the top users of arXiv in Australia. Since joining Melbourne in 2009, the Library is being reinvigorated under Philip's leadership. A ten year strategy is being pursued to better support the University's mission in research, learning, teaching and engagement. Philip chairs the Group of 8 University Librarians, is a member of the executive of the Council of Australian University Librarians and a Director of CAVAL Ltd. In addition to mainstream library issues his job encompasses cultural collections and fundraising.

University of Texas, Austin, US, Molly White, Director, Math, Physics, Astronomy Library (PMA) (2-year term)

Molly White has been head librarian of the Physics Mathematics Astronomy Library at UT Austin for 21 years, roughly the life span of arXiv. She has been very active in SLA library association activities focused on the physical sciences and has participated in conferences and panels addressing the information needs of research scholars. Through appointments to the publication boards of the three major scholarly society publishers in these disciplines she has developed a thorough knowledge of the differing publication practices of arXiv participants. She currently serves as librarian liaison to the American Astronomical Association Publications Board.

University of Alberta, Canada, Tim Klassen, Head, Science and Technology Library (4-year term)

Tim Klassen is Head, Science & Technology Library at the University of Alberta in Edmonton Alberta. Previous positions include Head of the Science Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and at Wesleyan University. He was also a Science Librarian at Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Oregon, and was Systems Librarian at Southern Connecticut State University. Tim has almost 20 years of experience in Physics collection development and has been involved in a number of Physics journal evaluation projects. Current interests include assessment, e-science, and all issues related to OA publishing. He's a 20 year plus member of ALA, has served on several STS committees, and is currently co-chair of the Assessment Committee.

University of Helsinki, Finland, Eva Isaksson, Physics Librarian (2-year term)

Eva Isaksson works as a physics librarian at University of Helsinki Library, with a focus in bibliometrics and quality control of the physics publications entered in the University of Helsinki research database. She worked at the Helsinki Observatory 1981-2009 as an astronomy librarian, has been active with several LISA (Library and Information Services in Astronomy) conferences and is an editor of LISA V and LISA VII proceedings volumes. She has studied theoretical physics and done research in the history of theories of gravitation prior to entering a career in librarianship. She is also author of books on women scientists and the social responsibility of scientific research.

2. High-Contributing Organizations

Four voting members representing each consortia or national organization member that contributes 5% or more of arXiv's annual income. The MAB Bylaws specify up to five voting members from this category and currently there are four eligible groups (representing 61 organizations).

Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), US, Jim Mullins, Dean of Libraries at Purdue University

Mullins has over 35 years of library experience. He came to Purdue in 2004 from MIT, where he was associate director for administration. Prior to MIT he held senior administrative positions at Indiana University and Villanova University. Dean Mullins received BA and MALS degrees from the University of Iowa and the PhD from Indiana University. Mullins has served in leadership positions within the American Library Association (ALA) and the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and is a member of the ARL board of directors and is chair of the e-Science Working Group. He received his bachelor's degree in religion and history and his master's degree in library science from the University of Iowa. He received his doctorate in library administration, with a minor in higher education/law, from Indiana University.

Consortium arXiv-DH and HGF: Coordinated by the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, Germany, Uwe Rosemann, Director, German National Library of Science and Technology - TIB, Germany

Roseman studied mathematics with sociology as his subsidiary subject at the University of Bielefeld. Rosemann began his professional career in 1980 as a subject specialist in mathematics and computer science at Bielefeld‟s university library where, in 1990, he became the head of department for library use and library technology. Uwe Rosemann then assumed the post as deputy director at the former UB/TIB in 1993. Uwe Rosemann has managed large-scale, third-party funded projects and has worked for the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) on various boards and committees. In addition, he has also acted as an expert adviser. Rosemann is a member on several scientific advisory boards and commissions. For many years, Uwe Rosemann has been the chairman and member of the board for the „subito‟ and „vascoda‟ library networks, as well as a co-publisher of the specialist publication, "Zeitschrift für Bibliothekswesen und Bibliographie", which is a journal for librarianship and bibliography. Uwe Rosemann publishes articles and holds lectures on themes related to the management of libraries, digital libraries and copyright law.

Jisc, UK, Catriona Cannon, Associate Director, Collection Support, Bodleian Libraries

In her current role, Catríona is responsible for leadership, management, policy and planning responsibilities for the library-wide collection support functions and scholarly communications programme. This includes collection acquisition, licensing and description, whether through purchase, legal deposit or donation, and collections care, preservation, storage, logistics and the operational management of exhibitions. Her duties also include overseeing the Bodleian Libraries' materials budget and leading the subject librarians in developing and managing the collections. She has served on a number of professional committees throughout her career and is currently a member of the Legal Deposit Implementation Group and the Joint Committee for Legal Deposit. She is a Life Member of Wolfson College Common Room. Catríona graduated from Trinity College Dublin (French and Latin) in 1990, received an MPhil in European Literature from the University of Oxford in 1992 and an MA in Library and Information Studies from University College London in 1995. She became a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) in 1997.

University of California, US, MacKenzie Smith, University Librarian at UC Davis

MacKenzie Smith has been the University Librarian at UC Davis since June, 2012. Smith has been an academic research librarian since 1985, specializing in information technology and digital knowledge management. She attended the University of Washington before moving to the Midwest to attend graduate school at the University of Chicago. She spent the following decades on the East Coast, at the libraries of Harvard University and MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She led cutting-edge research projects in digital libraries and archives; Web applications for online scholarly communication; and digital data curation in support of e-science. She also led the development of the DSpace open source software platform for digital archives. As a research fellow for the Creative Commons organization, she has worked extensively on intellectual property policy for scientific research data and on advocacy for Open Access to scholarly journals and other research products.

3. Simons Foundation

Yuri Tschinkel, Director of Mathematics and the Physical Sciences, Simons Foundation, US
Professor of Mathematics, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University

Yuri Tschinkel received his doctorate in mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992. From 1992-95 he was Junior Fellow of the Harvard Society of Fellows, and from 1995-96 he was a Leibniz fellow at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Prior to joining the Simons Foundation in 2012, Tschinkel was a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a visiting associate professor at Princeton University, the Gauss chair of mathematics at the University of Göttingen, and professor and chair of the mathematics department at the Courant Institute, New York University. He was also a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and held visiting fellowships at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge, University of Tokyo, Max Planck Institute in Bonn, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in Paris, Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich, and Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences at Kyoto University. He serves on the editorial boards of Experimental Mathematics, the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, the Central European Journal of Mathematics, and the Progress in Mathematics series from Birkhäuser. Yuri Tschinkel studies higher-dimensional algebraic varieties, their hidden symmetries and rational points. He is an author of about 100 publications (most of them available on arXiv) and editor of 15 books.

Oya Y. Rieger, Associate University Librarian, Digital Scholarship & Preservation Services; arXiv Program Director (MAB Chair)

Rieger oversees the Library's digitization, repository development, digital preservation, electronic publishing, and e-scholarship initiatives with a focus on needs assessment, requirements analysis, business modeling, and information policy development. She has provided leadership in various digitization and online publishing initiatives that explore and promote new models of scholarly communication. Rieger has a B.S. in Economics (METU), an M.S. in Public Administration (University of Oklahoma), and an M.S. in Information Systems (Columbia University). She received her Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction from Cornell University.
