ARTstor updates

  • Handle system needs to be considered when moving entirely over to Shared Shelf.
  • Service-level agreement may be necessary if ARTStor cannot keep up with KVRF loads, which are now down to two/year.
  • Shared Shelf, although still extremely temperamental, is now being utilized for multiple collection development efforts, including multiple faculty grants; most small collections have been migrated to Shared Shelf (although they will continue to live in Luna as well).

Kaltura updates

  • We agreed to proceed with front-end development for CUL (see MIT Tech TV as an example).
  • We will also push for connection to E-Commons, though this is a ways off in terms of prioritization.

Subgroups

  • We agreed to form a Reference/Instruction/Outreach subgroup. Kaila will send out a call to VRWG and set up the first meeting.
  • A/V subgroup will continue to meet to discuss ongoing development efforts for A/V support throughout libraries.

February Minutes sent to CU-LIB

  • We welcomed Marsha Taichman, the new Visual Resources & Public Services Librarian, Fine Arts Library.
  • Kaltura is the new audio/video streaming platform service being deployed campus-wide by CIT, with customized implementations for CUL, Blackboard, Lab of O, and Cornell Cast.  Danielle, Jason, and Jim Reidy are leading CUL's development of Kaltura, focusing on three key development efforts: collection building; staff access with possible centralized, front-end "media-space" for dissemination; and E-Commons integration.  Development efforts to date have been slow, but spring should bring focus to the CUL deployment.  Look out for upcoming presentations on Kaltura, including one during Career Development week in March.  Jason shared the results of the Audio/Video Survey sent out to cu-lib: In December 2011 - January 2012, the VRWG conducted a survey of a/v needs in the Cornell University Library system. CUL owns a substantial amount of analog and digital media holdings; including archival, commercial and in-house created assets. Common needs stated are: aggregated platforms for access, archiving and editing digital media; funds and staffing to digitize analog recordings; purchase and maintenance of analog equipment; creation of a repository for 'digital prototyping' and CADD/Form Z output; and more. The VRWG plans to analyze these needs to assess our place in facilitating services.
  • Arts & Sciences Grants 2012:
Proposals are due March 30th. Please spread the word and encourage interested A&S faculty to apply.
  • ARTstor Shared Shelf
Three Cornell collections are now available in Shared Shelf Commons (sscommons.org)
Costs: For now, Central Library funds will cover the per asset costs associated with utilizing Shared Shelf.  Over the next year we expect the advanced cataloging tool and more control over uploading images, although development efforts have also been slower than expected.
  • New Image Resources: Vogue Archive Online is now available. It was recommended by the Social Sciences Team and purchased with new one-time funds. It will need to be added to the Image Databases list.
  • ACRL Visual Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education
The ACRL Board approved the standards in October 2011. They are published on the ACRL standards web site. Kaila co-authored with 3 members of the ACRL Image Resources Interest Group (IRIG) Visual Literacy Standards Task Force.
  • *Discovery & Access: *We discussed the status of images in the discovery systems, and our need to advocate and work with the different teams to integrate image resources.
  • 2012 Goals: We began a discussion of our goals for this year. Suggestions were more updates and discussion on Collection Development, Discovery & Access, and Public Services issues and projects.
