Spring 2011 Challenges

The following documents are copied from Fall 2010 and are thus only drafts. The goal is to edit this before the spring semester begins! All edits should be made to the attached word documents. Do NOT create files with new names. Instead simply replace the existing file with the revised file.

New Challenges

Portable water treatment system that can be used in emergencies.

This topic has come up several times and could be a significant contribution. Agua Para el Pueblo has mentioned that they would like to have access to a portable water treatment plant. The challenge is to create a design using lightweight materials that can easily be transported to a location where safe water is needed.

Automated Chlorinator for self serve community water stations

Build on the automated dose controller to create a device that automatically meters in the correct amount of chlorine when a valve is opened to take water from a public standpipe.

Point of Use Slow Sand Filter

The AguaClara experience with flow control and with the use of aluminum based coagulants to improve filtration provides an outstanding opportunity to develop a point of use slow sand filter that performs far better than any of the current models. From CEE 4540 in 2010 we have one POU SSF proposal that incorporates simple flow control and hypothesizes that intermittent small dosages of alum could improve filter performance.

Technology Selection Guide

Add a technology selection guide to our website. Provide the basic information on selecting the best water sources and the best treatment processes for those water sources. Describe the data necessary to make an informed engineering decision.
