  • Unit processes must be observable whenever possible (no sealed reactors)
  • must be possible to operate plant without doing math
  • Chemical dosages are set directly
  • maintenance operations must be doable by 1 person
  • direct reading indicator of plant flow rate
  • chemical dosing control point must be close to flocculator
  • have no small parts that can be easily lost
    minimize use of valves to reduce costs
    have removalable parts for inspection and maintenance
    be sized so that all tanks are accessible by a human for inspection
