The purpose of this policy is to formalize a procedure for gaining access to laboratories to ensure that all laboratory users (post docs, visiting scientists, GRA, TA, M. Eng. students with stipends, and paid undergraduates) have received the required safety training.
Safety Training Requirements
All users of the Engineering laboratories and shops must receive the Chemical Safety for Laboratory Workers training. You can do this most easily at http://www.blackboard.cornell.edu/. After logging in, select "all blackboard sites", then "Environmental Health & Safety". You will need to enroll in the required course, view the course materials and then take and pass a quiz.
- Laboratory Safety (EHS-LaboratorySafety) - required for all users of Engineering laboratories and shops
- ChemWaste (EHS-ChemWaste) - required for all users of Engineering laboratories and shops
- Additional safety training may be required before using specific equipment. We understand that some laboratory users may only use office space or computer facilities in laboratories and may not intend to use chemicals. However, these students are in the laboratory space and are potentially exposed to chemicals and thus must receive the training.
We have considered several options for helping to ensure that everyone receives the required training. We have decided to link the safety training requirement with gaining access to CEE laboratory facilities. Access will be through the laboratory managers; they will verify that safety training requirements are met prior to approving access.
Procedure for gaining access to CEE laboratories:
- Student takes the required courses
- Student sends an email listing name, NetID, and Cornell ID card number with access request (including which labs you need access to) to Paul Charles.
