So, instead of the usual hyphen, try Ctrl + Shift + Hyphen. With that, you'll find that the hyphenated word is treated as a single word and not split onto two different lines.

(I use this quite often when formatting documents – actually I used it just now so that I could move down one line without creating a new bullet! I also use it when I don't don’t want the extra space you get before a new paragraph when I want to start a new line.)
