Motivation & Objectives
The Demo Plant is a fully functional, transparent miniature AguaClara water treatment plant. It is designed and used for three main purposes:
- Education. We use the Demo Plant to demonstrate the fundamental processes involved in an AguaClara water treatment plant, to individuals and organizations that would like to get involved in the project, as well as to communities in Honduras that are interested in implementing this technology. The Demo Plant is also used to train operators of existing AguaClara water treatment plants in Honduras.
- Outreach. We use the Demo Plant in most of our outreach activities, in order to increase public awareness of the project, and to demonstrate the viability of the technology. For more information, please visit the Outreach Team page.
- Research. Since Fall 2007, the Demo Plant team has been performing experiments using the demo plant in order to find ways to improve the AguaClara technology.

The goal of the Demo Plant team is to create a demonstration-scale version of the technologies used in full-scale AguaClara plants in several rural communities in Honduras. The Demo Plant is an important tool used to promote AguaClara in the Cornell community, at national conferences, and for community workshops in Honduras. The Demo Plant effectively shows how water flows through the plant and includes a chemical dose controller, flocculator, sedimentation tank, and stacked rapid sand filter. Furthermore, the Demo Plant fits easily into a standard piece of luggage. |
