Demo Plant

Project Objectives

The goal of the Demo Plant team is to create a demonstration-scale version of the technologies used in full-scale AguaClara plants in several rural communities in Honduras. The Demo Plant is an important tool used to promote AguaClara in the Cornell community, at national conferences, and for community workshops in Honduras. The Demo Plant effectively shows how water flows through the plant and includes a chemical dose controller, flocculator, sedimentation tank, and stacked rapid sand filter. Furthermore, the Demo Plant fits easily into a standard piece of luggage.

    Consider the following goals:

    • Finish and test the flocculator that was designed and built by Nicole, Seth, and Gabe in CEE 454
      • Add bracing to prevent the side walls from bowing
      • Build an inlet that can handle the higher design flow rate
      • Test the flocculator to see how it performs and to evaluate whether it is a suitable design for future demonstration flocculators
    • Use transparent FCMs in the demo plants (this should be done for the ESW conference)

Assess whether the turbidimeter data is an adequate method of evaluating the flocculator performance. Compare the turbidimeter data with visual assessment of the location where flocs had grown to a size of several mm. Record head loss and calculate G¿. I thought that visually you had confirmed that adding obstacles made a difference in previous tests. In the summary of past research you suggest that the obstacles did not improve performance.

Clarify your overarching goal for why you want to produce a new demo plant design. You haven't connected the goal of building new demo plants with your research goals.
