ENGRD 1050 Presentations

The Basics

Throughout the Fall semester, AguaClara gives presentations Presentations are made to the Intro to Engineering 1050 classes for new Freshmen throughout the fall semester. The purpose of these presentations is to get new students interested in joining the project. You will likely be contacted by professors, faculty-advisors, or peer-advisors to set these up.

In general, it is recommended that two AguaClara team members conduct these presentations; if two Outreach team members are not available, utilize the AguaClara Listserv (aguaclara-l@cornell.edu) to contact a replacement.  One member (or both members, to be safe) should bring a flash-drive/laptop that contains a copy of the chosen PowerPoint presentation.

A typical presentation consists of:

a) PowerPoint presentation
b) an explanation of the demo plant, and
c) AguaClara in Honduras slide-show (optional).

It would also be wise to send reminder e-mails to the professor and to the team members giving the presentation before hand; follow up afterward to see how it went.

The Fall 2009 Demo Plant Manual will help you learn how to set up and use the demo plant

Planning Presentations

Here are a few options for planning 1050 presentations:

1)  Present in the 1050 classroom.

ENGRD 1050 classes are typically held in small lecture-style classrooms throughout the Engineering Quad.  If the room has a projector and a few tables, as well as a nearby bathroom (for obtaining water for the demo plant, clean-up, etc.), it will probably be sufficient.  An important thing to keep in mind, however, is that the demo plant will take some time to set up.  Make sure that the room will be empty and at your disposal for at least 30 minutes before you are scheduled to present.

2) Present in a classroom and the AguaClara lab.

The PowerPoint portion of the  presentation (and the slide-show, if you choose to use it) will take place in a classroom.  Later, the students can visit Depending on the arrangements made with the Professor, the presentation can first be given in the students' classroom and then walk the students down to the lab to see the demo plant, which you should set up beforehand.  Because the lab is in the basement of Hollister (and for the sake of time) the beginning portion of the presentation should probably be held in Hollister as well.  In the past, we have used rooms 110 and 320 - both worked out nicely.  There is always, of course, room 366.  Check with Hollister administration to book a classroom for your presentation.

3) Present in the AguaClara lab.

. Alternately the entire presentation can be given in the lab. If the presentation is in the lab you will want to check out a projector from the library. Make sure you have enough time to get one from say, Mann another library (Mann, for example) if the one in Engineering is checked out. At either location you will want to bring a laptop in case the class does not have one you can use.A presentation that you can use is one of the Outreach Resources. As with all other options, set up the demo plant before beginning the presentation.  The conveniences of presenting within the lab are that set-up and clean-up are much easier, and you do not have to worry about finding an available room for the presentation.  Keep in mind, however, that the lab is not especially large and does not have any seating; taking into consideration the class size and length, you can assess which presentation option will work best.
