Agenda

  1. New and Notable - 5 minutes of new or interesting technology, open to all, things to be on the lookout for
    1. Tobi mentioned Oculus Rift https://www.oculus.com/en-us/rift/
    2. Sara and Camille mentioned that CUL will be purchasing 50 LibCal seats and that Mann is asking for 35 of them (see later).
    3. Matt and Camille mentioned the DIY Panopto cart that they and Sarah Young are building. It is a portable workstation with computer and recording software so that librarians can make short Ask A Librarian videos.
    4. Camille told us about Space Finder, https://spacefinder.lib.cam.ac.uk/, a interactive map that shows Cambridge, UK students where they can study depending on their needs (group, atmosphere, noise levels, etc.)
  2. Report on Past Month's Action Items
    1. Elevator folk (Matt)
      1. life of unplugged ipad - ~ 6 to 7 hours with screen brightness at 33%
      2. meeting with facilities and Schindler - estimate is $1100 per car.
      3. estimate for wall outlet between elevators - not received as yet
  3. Digital Signage needs for adding Individual Study Rooms to LibCal (Sara)
    1. With the addition of the LibCal seats we will soon have, we are thinking of putting our individual study rooms on LibCal and letting the patrons reserve the rooms themselves, much like they can for the Agati booths, the One-Button Studio, and the Interview Room. Sara wonders what our digital signage needs are if/when we do this. Do we have enough ipads to put one in front of every room (we don't)?
  4. Consultation Area Display (Tobi & Nick)
    1. Tobi mentioned that the new LibCal seats would also be used with the consultation desks so that the librarians who staff the different desks could manage the reservations themselves, and then after hours these desks could be opened up as reserve spaces for student groups. What would our digital signage needs be if we did this? Digital Signage, the free signage service Matt has been playing with, could run two different campaigns, one showing the consultation schedule (run during the day) and one running a reservable consultation space calendar (run after hours).
    2. Camille mentioned that the Knight Writing Institute had a graduate help service and would like to include in their undergraduate writing help service that they currently provide. They love working in the consultation area and want to add this second desk. Tobi pointed out that we could use 10 more LibCal seats than the 35 we have already asked for.
  5. Suma status (Nick)
    1. Sara, Tobi, and Nick reported that their conference went very well and that people were very interested in how Mann is using SUMA. Tobi, Sara, and Camille have had a book chapter accepted that describes SUMA (Congratulations!). Nick showed up a mock-up of a new SUMA interface that doesn't require scrolling on the ipad, and also includes three hot keys for common SUMA combinations (i.e. individual/group table/studying/laptop). He also included a counter for those aggregaters who mentally count physical instances of a situation and then enter in multiple times on the ipad.
  6. Makerspace Grant Status
    1. Sad news; Sara said that the grant was denied. There are still possibilities to move forward. Mary is looking at the excellence fund as a possible source of funding, and there are other grants we could apply for in the spring.
  7. (at the 55 minute mark) Recap - summarize meeting and list action tasks for next month's meeting
    1. Assigned Action List
      1. Tobi Hines will pull circ stat data on graduate rooms for Nick
      2. user-177d6 will follow up with the shops and get a quote for installing electrical outlets between the elevator doors on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. If this quote is cheaper than the Schindler quote we might do this instead.
      3. user-cc7e8 will ask for 10 more LibCal seats, moving it up form 35 to 45
      4. All of us with think about digital signage needs if we make the individual rooms reservable.
