November 2014

November 19th in Olin 703

Agenda:

  • General Announcements (all)
  • ARTstor update (Hannah)
  • Shared Shelf release and OIV 4.0 release (Hannah and Mira)
  • Digitization Projects (Danielle)
  • AV Task Force Update
  • Archivision and possible Luna demo (Mira)

Meeting Notes:

In attendance: Hannah Marie Marshall, Danielle Mericle, Susette Newberry, Boris Michev, Matt Ryan, Barb Morley, Eisha Neely, Marsha Taichman and Mira Basara

-We welcomed a new VRWG member from Mann library, Matt Ryan!
-The migration of Pictor to ARTstor Shared Shelf has been pushed to January. The Shared Shelf release 1.1 is scheduled for mid-December. This upcoming release should bring a re-architected media module for better and faster upload. The Kaltura integration into Artstor is still in development. Artstor came out with new OIV 4.0 release, but OIV is not used much at Cornell. In development: custom mappings of work to display records (applicable to Pictor migration and future applications). Embedded metadata extractor also available (“emet”) (something you can also do using Bridge) http://www.artstor.org/global/g-html/download-emet-public.html
- The AD White, Ornithology collection and Beyond the Taj are being moved to Shared Shelf. After these collections are reviewed, they will be published to Shared Shelf Commons.
- Danielle gave an update on current projects. We are wrapping up three Arts & Science projects from 2013 and ongoing Historic Glacial Images of Alaska. Potential new project to expand Beyond the Taj collection.
- Discussion about ARTstor cost – Artstor used to charge per asset; now is per storage. We are close to 1.5 TB which will move us to next higher rate. Replace tiff images with high res jpgs. Archivision Module 7 & 8 is a good candidate for image replacement.
- AV Task Force Update – The group is looking for use case scenarios of A/V materials, any input is helpful. Danielle is going to meet with Peter Hirtle to review and write down rights policy for all different cases. Danielle will share the wiki with the group to look at triage. The group wants to develop a flowchart for making decisions about preserving a/v content. New system: Avalon, to talk to Kaltura, to deliver content for limited time to students. Hydra platform. Desi and Tre are interviewing departments about their AV assets and will be wrapping up interviews next spring. At that point, a white paper will be prepared for Anne Kenney and Ted Dodds.

April 2014

April 16 in Olin 703

Agenda:

  • Capturing video and images associated with 4 new MOOCs (Roberta)- Videos stream from Youtube, can download transcripts, not currently going into either of the Cornell instances of Kaltura. Can we consider cataloging and considering a part of the collection. Roberta confirmed that the videos make sense without the MOOC experience; providing access to the video through the library can be considered without having to necessarily maintain the MOOC experience. There might be IP issues with student and faculty work. Need to work with Jaron to figure out the Library's involvement with MOOC's. Start a discussion with Liz, Danielle and Jaron.
  • Developments on CUL VR pages (Steven)- Kaila will create copyright for images page.
  • ARTstor mobile usability test, Steven will circulate a test to VRWG. Please send responses by April 22nd.

March 2014

In attendance: Melissa, Steven, Hannah, Mira, Marcie, Marsha, Eisha, Tre, Kaila, Boris, Susette, Roberta

Agenda:

  •  Images in the new Beta website, http://beta.library.cornell.edu/. The usability group plans to test functionality of both platforms (SharedShelf) and how these platform integrate with the website and how VRWG might be involved in this process (Steven)
  • VR Page(s) on current CUL catalog (Marsha and Steven)
  • A new group (RepoExec) is looking at high level issues around the digital platforms we employ, such as redundancy of systems, issues of discoverability, and preservation of digital content. The group is still trying to figure out the best way to approach these issues, but one thought is to break into groups by format. VRWG could play a significant role in a digital media/images group, but RepoExec has not settled an exact process yet.
  • VRA Conference update (Mira and Hannah)
  • No labels
