Spring 2012 Contributions

We have updated the design of the foam filter so that it will be more simple to operate and present.  In end implementation, the system will still likely have 2 finishing filters and perhaps two roughing filters as well for cleaning purposes.

Nadia and I have been working on procuring a consistent source of foam.  We need the foam for our own testing and presentation of the foam filter, but also to demonstrate the supply of foam exists for a larger supply of foam filtration devices.  We have ordered samples of foam from multiple companies and are awaiting price quotes from these companies.  Once we receive the foam, we can finish construction of the filter and begin full scale tests.

The group will be working this week on beginning our application for the P3 conference in Washington DC in April and will be submitting this document as our research report at the end of the week.

Summer 2013 Contributions

This summer, I am a member of the Wastewater (UASB) team researching how AguaClara can expand to treat domestic wastewater in a sustainable manner. Our goals for the summer include building a variety of small Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors to test treatment efficiencies. The focus of our initial research is on the adaptation of the Solid-Liquid-Gas separator to achieve longer Sludge Retention Times (SRT). It is our belief that the SRT and upflow velocity are the primary variables affecting treatment efficiencies, and we hope by increasing the SRT we will be able to achieve high treatment efficiencies with low Hydraulic Residence Times (HRT).
