Fall 2008 Mid-Semester Contributions

During the Fall 2008 semester I have worked on the FCM Chlorine Precipitation team. Specifically, I have worked to continue the studies on the model designed over the summer. Initially using a concentration of 9.29 g/L of calcium hypochlorite, and more recently a concentration of 15.58 g/L, we have systematically been trying to clog the hypochlorinator. I have run the system six times, and October 19th was the first days that I noticed the system fully clog. I set up the model with two additional parts, a 7kPa pressure sensor and a pH meter. I also started data acquisition with these sensors using the Easy Data program and the pH meter program. Last week, (while the noise makes some of the data incomprehensible) I have begun to organize and analyze the data using Microsoft Excel. The next step is to determine which part clogged (we think it is the T joint) and to clean it and see whether it takes more or less time to clog the system with a different method of preparing the solution, which we have been discussing at length.
