Fall 2014 Contributions

As a member of the Village Supply subteam in Fall 2014, I worked on the household infrastructure segment of flow design. More specifically, I worked on designing a sink that alleviated public health concerns in Jharkhand, India. Currently, sinks in the village can be described as "platform sinks," where water flows onto a cement platform that is placed outdoors. Many daily chores such as washing hands, dishes and clothes are done here and the platform is difficult to clean and is rather uncomfortable to use. In place of such a system, I designed a "Dual Platform and Elevated Sink" design that divides water flow between a steel elevated basin for cleaning small dishes, washing hands, and drinking water, as well as a leveled platform below for larger washing tasks. The design is meant to use materials that are easy to clean and maintain, as well as provide comfort to the villagers who need to use the system every day.
