Spring 2012 Contributions

This semester I have switched teams from the LCDC Team to the Stacked Rapid Sand Filtration - Pilot Scale Team. This goals of the team this semester is to optimize the duration of backwash, which in the field is currently running at 10 minutes which could possibly be reduced to 6 minutes. Thus cutting back on time and the amount of clean water used in backwash. A four-layer SRSF will also be created to study any differences when compared to the current six-layer model. The same height will be utilized, but each sand layer will have an additional 10cm of media and flow might be distributed differently throughout.

Fall 2011 Contributions

I am a member of the Chemical Dose Controller (CDC) Team. This semester will be used for improving the chemical flow, by decreasing minor head loses, and reducing the horizontal distance required for the apparatus.  Previous semester team member Matthew Higgins created viscosity data that will help develop proper tube lengths when using water vs. coagulant. Another goal of this team this semester it to write an updated article for submission to the Journal of Environmental Engineering that details the designs of the CDC, including both theoretical and practical constraints known.
