Our main goal is to Successfully aid in the construction and completion of the Marcala Water Treatment Plant.

By Feb 15th we hope to finish the Marcala detail including:

  1. Determine Baffle Spacing for Section A of flocculator.
  2. Specify Plant Leveling Tank Mechanics
  3. Calculate Number and Size of Orifices in Effluent Launder from Sedimentation Tanks to Plant Leveling Tank

Once the final aspects of the Marcala Water Treatment Plant are designed, we will work to integrate our designs with the automated design team.

For the remainder of the semester:

  1. Automate the interactions between the flocculation and sedimentation tank to integrate with the automated design code over a range of flow rates.
  2. Automate the plant leveling tank and determine hydraulic profile for each system in the plant.
  3. Developing the design algorithm for the baffle spacing to be used on Tamara plant.
  4. Develop further the Flow Control Module to design an algorithm as a function of desired chemical flow rate and the viscosity of the chemical.

Goal 3 may need to be revised. The pipe dimensions for the effluent launders are already determined and the pipes connecting the launder to the plant leveling tank were installed during our trip in January. The remaining design issue is the number and size of the holes to be drilled in the launder since the head loss through these holes will determine how equally the water divides between the 4 (or 5) sed tanks.

Concurr with Monroe's comments. The 5th sed tank will be at same elevations as first four and will most likely be 25 cms longer. Collector pipe will be connected directly to Regulator box and distance will be about two feet with one 6 inch pipe serving the two subdivded units. Width of new sed tank will be the same as originals.

The first 3 goals chould be completed by mid February. Add goals for the remainder of the semester.
The plant leveling and the orifice size calculations should be coordinated with the Hydraulic design team.
The Unit Processes design algorithms are to be integrated into the automated design code. We need to develop an integrated design to determine the size of the sed and floc tanks over a range of flow rates. This must somehow accomodate the supply channel and possible a new treated water channel in the sed tanks. This design task is likely relatively simple. A more complex task is developing the design algorithm for the baffle spacing. The goal at this stage is to develop a design algorithm that we are willing to use for Tamara with the expectation that the baffle spacing design algorithm will be modified as we learn more.
Another design area that we need to develop further is the FCM. We need a clear design algorithm as a function of desired chemical flow rate and the viscosity of the chemical.
