Team Precipitation

Fall 2008 Minutes

10/8/08

Accomplishments

  • Discussed Monroe's thoughts on solving the problem.
  • Monroe believes that the addition of HCl to chlorine could react with chlorine. He also believes that it would be difficult to get to aguaclara plants.
  • HCl is added to water treatment plants to solve calcuim carbonate precipitation, and I do not believe that it will react with chlorine but the problem should be further investigated.
  • I believe that the current test we are performing is not providing us any insight on the precipitation problem.
  • Discussed new strategies for solving our problem, like a settling test in a graduated cylinder.

Goals for the week

  • Beginning the settling test and observing the results once a day.

Outcomes

  • We have decided to stop the current lab test of running the calcium hypochlorite through the flow controller for now.
  • Going to start a settling observation test.
  • Ideally after we have a better idea of how fast and how completely the settling occurs we will design a procedure for settling and filtering the calcium carbonate out of solution
