The Engineering Review process is an important safeguard to minimize the risk of facility failures due to faulty design guidelines. As the AguaClara team begins working with multiple partner organizations it becomes increasingly important that we take steps to ensure that our design tool and any customized design recommendations are carefully reviewed.
Design Tool Verification
We need to create a design validation process to test new releases of the online design tool. The validation process should involve independent calculations of flow passage dimensions, reactor dimensions, and water surface elevations.The validation tool should not use ANY of the MathCAD files used by the design tool. New releases of the design tool should be tested by creating and validating a large number of different designs. The validation process could be automated by having the validation tool pull values from the list of parameter values.
Design Revision Review Process
In addition to design review it is also imperative that when designs are revised that we use file version numbers so it is possible to confirm that the correct design revision is being used for construction. This policy includes two components for design revisions or for the addition of details that weren't specified in the original design.
- Two step review process
- Unique incremental file version numbers for all design revisions
- All preliminary design files will have PRELIMINARY DESIGN at the end of the file name. Only the final files will replace PRELIMINARY DESIGN with FOR CONSTRUCTION.
Two Step Engineering Review
It is very important that work be reviewed before being submitted to the engineer responsible for final design and construction. All engineering designs must be reviewed by at least one other senior member of the design team and by Monroe before being released for implementation. The file containing the supporting drawings and calculations must include the following information:
- name of the principle engineer
- name of the reviewer
- date the design review was completed
The reviewed design can then be transmitted to Monroe via email for final review before being sent to the partner organization. The email must be copied to the reviewer.
Incremental file version numbers
In the case that design guidelines are revised it is imperative that file version numbers be incremented and that the file contain a log explaining what was updated.
