Design Meeting Minutes

Summer 2009 Minutes

6-19-2009

Entire Group

Accomplishments
  • Groups met individually to work on their design tutorials
  • Entire group met to discuss problems with MathCAD/AutoCAD coding
  • The first tasks of the summer were assigned to groups of 2 and 3
  • Discussed each of the assigned tasks
  • Update VNG to reflect the changes in the Sedimentation Tank file: the programs exit channel, inlet channel, lamella, launder, influent sed manifold are now all defined in one program
Goals for upcoming week
  • Groups will meet individually and with Heather to start on their first task.

Floc Hopper Group

Accomplishments
  • Determined the variables used and applied in the floc hopper design.
  • Started writing preliminary code for MtoA for floc hopper.
  • Discussed any other possible variables needed for the design (ex - angle of the floc hopper).
Issues
  • We had a few questions regarding shape, placement, and connection of the floc hopper to other plant parts.
  • We will discuss our issues with Heather or Monroe in the upcoming week.
Goals for upcoming week
  • After understanding our questions, we will write the MtoA code for the floc hopper.
  • If we have the necessary time, we will test our design extensively with different plant geometries.

Floc Port Group

Accomplishments
  • Updated the code to move the ports from the top to the bottom of the tank. Also, we adjusted the height arrangement of the baffles to agree with this new layout. We ensured that these edits scale properly.
Issues
  • We plan to continue commenting on the code as this greatly helps with understanding the progress of the programs
Goals for upcoming week
  • To move on to the next task and continue commenting

Sed Tank Exit Channel Group

Accomplishments
  • Met and discussed the variables needed for exit channel
  • Looked into what was meant for "direct step method"
Issues
  • Moody diagram for turbulent flow is based upon the Colebrook equation, which has the friction factor on both sides of the equation. Make MathCAD code iterative to find the factor that works?
  • Still unsure of what the direct step method entails
Goals for upcoming week
  • Meet with Monroe to discuss the best approach to tackling this problem

Material's List Group

Accomplishments
  • Became familiar with the Variable Naming Guide, Materials List, and previous work done on this task
  • Sorted through the Variable Naming Guide and determined which variables were unnecessary for calculating the Materials List
  • Worked on determining which variables and dimensions are most important for the Materials List
Issues
  • Team members need to become more familiar with the structure of the plant to determine exactly which variables are most important to be outputted by the Design tool
Goals for upcoming week
  • Finalize list of variables necessary for the MathCAD program
  • Work on updating Automated Materials List MathCAD program
  • No labels
