CFD Flocculation Tank 3D Simulation Meeting Minutes

Spring 2009 Minutes

February 27, 2009

Accomplishments

  • Read the FLUENT documentation on parallel computing and remote executing
  • Worked on finer mesh and boundary layers
  • Literature research on turbulence models, validation, and confined jets cases
  • More simulations with 2D Reynolds Stress models
  • More simulations comparing 2D and 3D with periodic boundary conditions

Metrics

NA

Outcomes

  • Some findings on the possible factors that can affect the shape and size of the energy dissipation region for k-epsilon realizable turbulence model:
    • range of the color scale: make sure to have an appropriate scale every time before plotting the contour
    • iteration routes: directly 2nd order or start from 1st order - which is unexpected
    • numbers of partitions: which shouldn't be a factor theoretically, but worthy investigating
    • found discrepancies in Yong Sheng's old cases and data, which might explain the difference between results from the 2D model and 3D model with periodic boundary condition. But this is not conclusive and the discrepancy itself needs investigation and explanation

Issues

  • the old case and data files are so un-organized that it is a little difficult to duplicate some old results or compare the parameters of different models;
  • need to organize the current case and data files, and try to reorganize the older ones, and make good records of any new simulation tests
  • Need more efficient and effective design of simulation tests to compare different models
  • Use report summary command in FLUENT and LINUX commands to compare old models
  • No labels
