Advisory Council

The AguaClara Advisory Council assists in long-range planning, program oversight, and development efforts. The current Advisory Council members are:

Ken Brown

Ken Brown, Mechanical Engineering '74, has been a partner with One Equity Partners since early 2002 and is currently based in Miami. OEP is the private equity arm of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and manages $8 billion of direct private equity investments in some 30 different portfolio companies around the world. Previously, Brown was president of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP and corporate vice president of the General Electric Company, where he served in regional corporate executive and operating roles in Latin America and Southeast Asia. Brown also spent 15 years in the mining, energy, and natural resources industry as a vice president of Inspiration Resources Corporation, senior manager in the consulting division of Price Waterhouse, and senior engineering manager at Science Applications International.

Len Lion

Professor Lion is author or co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He was the recipient of the Stephen '57 and Marilyn Miles Excellence in Teaching Award; at Cornell University, in 2000/2001, and served as the Director of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 2008-09. Prof. Lion is the recipient of research grants from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the U.S. EPA, the Office of Naval Research, the Electric Power research Institute, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the National Science Foundation.

A significant portion of Prof. Lion's research relates closely to the interests of the AguaClara project. Transport of nanoparticles, bacteria and macromolecules in porous media and the coupled transport of particle-bound contaminants have been evaluated in laboratory experiments and predicted with numerical models. Colloid stability, particle aggregation, and sedimentation are the focus of Prof. Lion's current research which is being performed in collaboration with Dr. Monroe-Weber-Shirk. These investigations are being applied to hydraulic flocculation, use of floc blankets in upflow sedimentation, and filtration as sustainable water treatment process applicable to developing countries.

Gail Richardson

Gail Richardson, Ph.D. is VP for Programs at Energy Vision, a NYC-based nonprofit organization, where she leads research and action projects to promote the conversion of organic wastes to sustainable vehicle fuel. During her 30-year career in the nonprofit sector Dr. Richardson has organized high-impact initiatives in the fields of environmental conservation (especially irrigation management), mathematics education, and child development. She is skilled communicator and the author of a dozen reports in several fields of expertise and has organized numerous workshops and conferences, including international events in the U.S., France, and Eastern Europe. She is a graduate of Cornell University and an alumna of the Cornell-in-Honduras program of the 1960s. Her advanced degrees involved research in Latin America.
