Plate Settler Spacing

Fall 2008 Minutes

9/23/08

Accomplishments

  • Determined that shear stress at the plate surfaces, which causes flocs to break, is not the limiting factor for determining plate settler spacing.
  • Continued to sketch set-up for experiment.

Metrics

  • Minimum spacing due to shear constraint; 0.021 mm

Outcomes

  • Collaborated with machinist to begin preparation of materials for experiment.
  • Decided to regulate the flow through column with the floc blanket and the flow through the sedimentation media separately.

Issues

  • Do not know exactly what the limiting factor for plate settler spacing is.
  • Need to determine what spacing we will use for our experiment. Currently considering various spacings based on floc size and desired plate length. We will seek to collaborate with Ian on this issue.
  • We are still waiting for the cone and pvc board (for uniform flow grid)order to come in.
