Planning for the next year
Discussed potential projects/ideas to focus on for upcoming year. First reviewed compiled list from Sara.
- 2nd floor tech desk
- Howard: don't have the budget right now but perhaps next year?
- roughly $40k to get the desk going - Gabriel: PTAC is also investigating maker's space
- Sara had suggested doing patron assessment of what's needed/wanted for this space
- Howard: don't have the budget right now but perhaps next year?
- Digital Signage
- Jim: example of interactive display?
- Nick: Camille might have a better idea based on her trip with Sara - Camille: Steelcase touch screen for study room reservations
- media wall at Duke - Howard: getting research efforts out in our digital space
- both Comm and Dyson are interested in the interactive displays - Howard: way finding, as Sara mentioned
- Camille: also being able to push our digital collections out
- Jim: holograms
- Nick: So no clear cut priority or use case in this area
- Camille: yes, we would need to define the use cases better and which ones do we have in common with Comm and Dyson?
- Gabriel: For me, the promotion/display of student work is most intriguing
* Howard: I'm with Gabriel, if you pinned me down, I'd be all for showcasing student work
* we should take a look at Duke's media wall
- Howard: way finding is still really interesting to me
* a lot of people asking about gallery, bathrooms
* Gabriel: can we integrate with Siri? - Nick: any known problem areas?
- Camille: from the ref desk, definitely the bathrooms and B30A/B; also printing
- Howard: but also more promotion for events
* right now only in the lobby
* would be nice to have them scattered throughout the library as well
- Jim: example of interactive display?
- Suma
- Howard: repeat button
- had to go through the same steps 19 times earlier today - Jim: yes, or a favorites/common activity
- Howard: Suma is really important, we can continue to justify our services based on usage data
- Nick: what other features? how is it working out on the data analysis side?
- Camille: Sara and Tobi are much more familiar with this but it has been somewhat difficult - Nick: it would be useful for me to shadow one/several of you next week while I'm in town
- would love to be able to get the data visualized in real-time/or as close as possible - Jim: one funky thing when you're counting
- counting a person as a single entity
- all of a sudden you realize that another person joins them, there's no way to increase the size of the group (from 1 -> 2-4)
- Howard: repeat button
- Salesforce and Chatter
- Camille: Salesforce is a CRM that CALS is using
- Chatter is their Yammer equiv
- CALS is using this for primary communication channel
- can broadcast to all CALS students
- rolling it out as we speak (went live during orientation) - Gabriel: how would we use this?
- Camille: joining to use it as a channel of communication
* targeting particular audiences
* asking questions for assessment
* recruit students - Gabriel: who's the point person to have access to Chatter from this group?
- Nick: if it does gain traction and they have an API we can use, we might want to integrate their data into our digital signage, etc.
- Camille: it's supposed to roll out to some other colleges beyond CALS down the road
- Camille: Salesforce is a CRM that CALS is using
- Furniture Assessment (after spring break)
- Howard: week of March 30th it's all getting installed
- so we have some time for this but this is important and we definitely want to address this
- Howard: week of March 30th it's all getting installed
- Bissett upgrade - faster switching technology
- - Gabriel: Matt may have some ideas on options for this
- Software List
- Gabriel: is this in our wheelhouse or Mann website committee?
- Camille: was she (Sara) referring to the MapIt site or software list on Mann website?
END OF SARA'S LIST
**************************************************************************************************************** - Howard: Reservation system?
- is this us or happening elsewhere
- Camille: Administration side of house
- cleanup the wiki
- housekeeping of Box acct
- Gabriel: I don't feel like there are as many learning technologies agenda items here
- I know it's bit broad
- feel like we've shied away from this original focus and have become more of a furniture/space assessment group
- so maybe we add some items with learning technology focus to the agenda or maybe we reconsider a name change?
- maybe re-evaluate some of our previous projects concerning public computing technology
- more power stations
- Howard: Matt is coming on in October
- Nick: should he be part of this group?

Thinking about getting back to having learning technologies on the agenda: there were items that we purchased that we weren’t able to integrate – appletv, chrome box, android mini – maybe it’s worth a 2nd look at these items and brainstorm some ideas on how we can put them to use?
