Fall 2011 Contributions - 'Water Treatment Technology Selection Guide' projectTeam Members: Li Hui Goh and Siwei Oon In the course of developing the Decision Support System (DSS) / WTTSG, I was involved in: - gathering information on water treatment technologies available with focus on unit treatment processes such as coagulation & flocculation, coagulation & flocculation - sedimentation, chlorination, SRSF, Roughing Filter, etc.
- compilation of the available Drinking Water guidelines available such as the US-EPA Drinking Water Standards and the WHO Drinking Water Guidelines
- piecing together all the information gathered above and coming up with concise write-ups and schematics for the various water treatment technologies featured in the DSS
- developing the algorithm, using the Multi-Criteria Decision Method, prior to programming it into the guide
- developing the guide on Microsoft Excel platform using the Visual Basic for Applications language
- fine-tuning the DSS to ensure that the DSS generates meaningful results - a suitable, sustainable and implementable combination of technology for the users
- developing a list of useful questions for users to pose to technology vendors when they are making any purchasing decisions

Evaluation and Reflections
I believe that the DSS that I have help developed is a useful tool for a layperson, especially those from small and resource-poor communities, in their selection of suitable and implementable water treatment technologies for their community. In addition, the DSS has been developed such that it is easy to use for layperson, and it is easily disseminated. All these qualities of the DSS makes it beneficial for anyone to learn more about water and be more empowered to select water treatment technologies. I am honored to be part of the WTTSG team to be able to contribute to the project.
