Hi everyone,

This morning, Naun and Jean and I got together to play around with the latest version of RIMMF—RDA in Many Metadata Formats. Some of you may remember using RIMMF for authority records back when we did RDA NACO training with the charismatic and endearing Paul Frank (2012?). Well, it’s new and improved, and it’s really great. It’s useful not only as a visualization tool for RDA cataloging, but also as a tool for importing MARC data, optionally editing it, and exporting it as Linked Data.

And that’s why it is being used in the upcoming “Jane-athon”—a session focused on creating Linked Data for materials related to Jane Austen and Blade Runner—in Chicago at ALA Midwinter:

A week from today, there will be an online session on using RIMMF3. It is intended to prepare attendees for the Jane-athon, but anyone is welcome to participate in the online session. Deborah Fritz of TMQ has given several RIMMF demonstrations at ALA meetings in recent years, and she’s really good. The session is two hours, which sounds like an eternity, but anyone who is interested should at least come and see what it’s all about, even if you don’t stay for the full two hours.

RIMMF3 is very encouraging; it makes me think that sometime in the not too terribly distant future, catalogers will have smarter, more efficient production tools at their disposal. It also makes the WEMI stuff more meaningful because you can see it in action.

Anyway, come to the RIMMF party in Olin 106, Tuesday, January 20, 2-4 p.m.
