This page complements information already provided by the registrar's course roster for CS.

Notes:

  1. Although "remote access" had been discussed previously as an option (subtly) distinct "online", no such distinction will be implemented.
  2. We only list courses "parented" by the CS department, since we can only vouch for information controlled by the CS department.
  3. Regarding students for whom the Ithaca time zone will not be between 8am and 10pm local time (henceforth "distant" students): you may be wondering whether or not distant students will have alternatives to any Ithaca-synchronous participation/attendance-based grades and/or will have access to sections/office hours at accessible times.  For now, assume at a minimum that all lectures will be recorded, and assume that many courses will make such adjustments, unless noted otherwise below or on the course website for definitive course-specific policies.
  4. Regarding students who are in the Ithaca area, in a class that has in-person exams, and registered for an online version of a course component: we have decided not to implement a department-wide policy as to whether such students must  take the in-person exam in-person, or whether an alternative will be available. Thus, the decision is up to the individual instructors.
  5. Enrollment restrictions and waitlist rules are described on the CS Enrollment Information Pages.
    1. The language for note 1, the general rule for CS 4000- and 5000-level courses has been rewritten for clarity:
As explained on the main enrollment page, we are giving preference to CS-affiliated students in our upper-level courses, though we anticipate many courses will be able to eventually accommodate everyone who wants to take them. The way we are handling this is by restricting direct enrollment on Student Center to students affiliated with Computer Science and/or other majors within CIS, while opening the Student Center waitlists for all other students.
Hence, direct enrollment in CS 4000- and 5000-level in-person lectures is restricted to CS- (not CIS) affiliated students only; other students should add themselves to the waitlist.
Similarly, online lectures, including online "mirrors" of in-person lectures, are restricted to CIS-affiliated students only, unless otherwise noted; others should add add themselves to the waitlist.
  6. Only students registered for the in-person version of a course may attend in-person meetings: "sitting in" or in-person "shopping" is not permitted this semester, due to contact-tracing requirements.
However, instructors intend to facilitate "shopping" via online means, by making lecture recordings for the first few lectures available to all Cornell students via netid access on the appropriate https://cs.cornell.edu/courses/csXXXX/2020fa page.
    1. If you have not received a seating assignment, even if you are enrolled in an in-person versiondo not come to the physical meeting; attend the online/shopping version instead.
  7. Information about which online lectures will allow co-enrollment in an overlapping course has been added to the CS Enrollment Information Pages
    1. Overlap of not more than 5 minutes permitted : 3220, 4410, 4411, 6210, 6787
    2. Overlap of any duration permitted: 1110, 1112, 1133, 2024, 2110, 2111, 2112, 2802, 4414, 4740, 4820, 5220, 6120, 6817, 6820, 6830, 7850

See the appropriate CS enrollment pages  --- specifically, the 1000-3000 level page, 4000-5000 level page, or  6000-level page - for definitive course-specific information and instructions on how to co-enroll in overlapping classes if permitted.

Questions about individual course's policies: contact the course instructor(s). The webpages for CS courses have a standard access URL of the form https://cs.cornell.edu/courses/csXXXX/2020fa, where XXXX is the course number (e.g., "1110").
