Background: Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Szentes (antigenic formula 16:k:1,2) is a serovar of the O: 16 (I) serogroups. S. Szentes is a rare serovar, only one human case in 2002 was reported in the US from data collected by CDC from 2001-2011. Similarly, in Europe only sporadic cases have been reported in England and Ireland; in addition, hazard notification for chilled mixed salad, sunflower meal and coriander haven been reported in Europe as well. In addition, an outbreak in Switzerland affected 13 people over a 9 months period.
Animal reservoir: There is not clear link of S. Szentes and animals
Geographic distribution: It appears that Europe has more reports than other regions.
Outbreak: The only outbreak of S. Szentes was reported in 2013 in Switzerland; this outbreak affected 13 patients, but no food was attributed to this outbreak.
