Oliver,

FYI, I am meeting with Hening's group this Thursday at 3pm to review some of the chemistry ELN's, will have some basic documentation prepared.  I think you would be welcome to attend.

Best,
Leah

Hi Hening,

Thank you for the comments on needs, I will highlight these various features in a few of the chemistry specific notebooks I've been reviewing.  We could try to meet at 3pm this Thursday?  Or anytime July 20-31.

Best,
Leah

Hi Leah,
Sorry for my slow response. It's great that you can come to speak to my group about this. Below I will comment on the list of specified needs:

Import data in native formats and analyze?  Yes, important Broad range of data types - especially considering chemical reaction schema and characterization data? Yes, important Use of templates and experiment organization?  Less important, but may be desirable Searchable and linkable across experiments? Yes.
Large user group and lab manager level access? Yes, important.
Access to full data remotely? Yes, important Local backup? Yes.
Flexible output options (reports, etc.)? Not sure.
Data export in transferable formats? Yes.
Digital signatures (tech transfer)? Yes.
Platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, various mobile devices)? Windows and Mac are fine.
Tech support and cost models? Not sure.

I will be traveling a lot this summer. I was out of town last week and will be traveling again this Friday till July 20. But I will be here this Tue, Wed, and Thur. I will also be available from July 20-Aug 5. Please let me know a few dates that would work for you and I can then schedule a meeting with my group. Thanks a lot!

Hening

Hi Hening,

I would be happy to come and compare these various options with your group.  Do you have a list of specified needs you are hoping to find?

Import data in native formats and analyze?
Broad range of data types - especially considering chemical reaction schema and characterization data?
Use of templates and experiment organization?
Searchable and linkable across experiments?
Large user group and lab manager level access?
Access to full data remotely?
Local backup?
Flexible output options (reports, etc.)?
Data export in transferable formats?
Digital signatures (tech transfer)?
Platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux, various mobile devices)?
Tech support and cost models?

Let me know when is a good time to review these.

Best,
Leah

Thanks, Leah! I have just started to think about options and am very green to this. Is it possible to have someone come to our group meeting to demo or explain the different options? Thanks!

Hi Hening,

Following along on Oliver's note, please let us know if Lab Archives does not cover what you are looking for.  There are a variety of other options available that we can arrange for trial periods.

For example, specific to chemistry now available:

Mbook from MestraLab (http://mestrelab.com/software/mbook/, links to Mnova for spectra analysis)

ePro from eNovalys (http://www.enovalys.com/epro/, synthesis oriented)

Studies Notebook from Dotmatics (http://www.dotmatics.com/products/studies-notebook/, can upload spreadsheets)

Elements from PerkinElmer (https://elements.perkinelmer.com/, makers of ChemDraw)

I am setting up a 3-month trial to Mbook and hope to have the access info out to CCB soon.  Let me know if you'd be interested to follow up further with any of these.

Best,
Leah

Hening,

I spoke to the Chemistry Librarian, Leah McEwen, late yesterday and she explained that Lab Archives may not have the variety of features of interest to most Chemists. She will reach out to you, if she hasn't already, and I hope you can find the right tool for your work.

Yours,  -Oliver.

P.S. I created a page to hold information about ELNs as they may relate to use within CCB:

Hi Oliver,
Thanks for the information! I will ask them to give a demo to my lab and find out whether it will fit our need.

Hening,

Nice speaking with you today. Regarding your question about electronic lab notebooks, to learn more about Cornell's relevant service (using Lab Archives), please contact Donna Taber, and she can initially be reached at CIT's Academic Technologies Support <atc_support@cornell.edu>. She can arrange a demo/discussion meeting, for example.

More information available here:

http://collabhelp.cit.cornell.edu/lab-archives/

Note that there are two versions. The "regular" one for chemistry research (the Pro version) and one for teaching labs (the Classroom Edition).

I've cc:ed Will Dichtel as Chair of the Computing Cmt as an FYI on interest. You may also want to touch base with John Marohn, who has set up his own solution. And if interested in the teaching labs context, Dan Lorey.

I welcome you letting me know of any positive or negative outcomes from your investigation so I can share with others as appropriate.

Yours in service, -Oliver.
