Current wireless in Physics's Admin conference room is homebrew. Since access is not controlled, and on the Physics Admin network, this is "not good" from a security (and CU policy) perspective. Ideally, should be serviced by RedRover.
Options considered 6/10/14

Any change will result in the wireless MAC address needing to be registered. Both RedRover and Access Net require this.

  • This is technically required of the Admin network, which is where the AP currently resides, but not being practiced in this single case. (Not good!)

PhysIT work with Barry (technical) and CIT (technical and pricing; work with Laurie Collinsworth, as of 5/5/14). And Todd (coordination and possible synergies).

Ideal

Coverage with RedRover.

  • Q: Need dedicated RedRover AP, or upgraded nearby ones sufficient?

Option

Costs and related issues

Notes

Ideal option 1: Upgraded nearby RedRover AP meets room's needs

$1,356 for 2 new APs ($678, 5/5/14)
+ ~$400 CIT labor (likely a high estimate)

No new wiring or conduit: Simply take down and put up new ones. And program the 2 APs appropriately.
Pull out homebrew AP.

Ideal option 2:Add RedRover AP to room.

$678 1 new AP (price as of 5/5/14)
+ ~$500 CIT labor (likely a high estimate)

Soft install acceptable? Require "soft" wiring (no conduit). And programming of the AP.
Pull out homebrew AP.

Option 3: Switch underlying network to current AP to Access Net.

$70, if single work order. Switch network AP's jack is on.

Test that Access Net's DCHP and MAC registration (same as RedRover's DB?) passes through.
