JSMIN Team Meeting: Feb. 6, 2014
- Draft methodology for measuring work across functional areas (and institutions). We reviewed a document (prepared by Adam) that outlines four options for measuring and reimbursing work we perform for one another: (1) cost recovery bound by a detailed MOU, (2) cost recovery without an MOU, (3) ReCAP-like aggregrate annual accounting, and (4) local time-based 2CUL currency. Like the working groups leads (who also reviewed this document), JSMIN favors the fourth option, although the first and third may also be useful in certain circumstances (e.g., for grant-funded 2CUL initiatives and for when 2CUL Technical Services is more mature, respectively). Kate and Jim will bring this working document to the TSI Admin Team for review, along with JSMIN's offer to appoint a task force to flesh out the fourth option if that would be useful at this point.
- We also discussed how to advise working groups whose investigations extend beyond their own functional areas or require input from other divisions within 2CUL. We concluded that we should propose neither general restrictions nor guidelines at this point, but let the groups' activities determine these protocols as the need arises. In other words, let's plan on learning from experience. Conversely, the work of TSI groups should not undermine or lead to abrogation of local responsibilities with regard to departmental and political protocols. In other words, let's keep our directors and supervisors in the loop.
