There’s been some discussion around the office about whether you have to add dates to an AACR2 personal name heading if you are updating the record anyway.  The answer is, it is up to your judgment.  You certainly have to add the dates to the 046, but you can choose whether you think it is a good idea to change the heading itself.

For an example of a record that was upgraded from AACR2 to RDA without adding dates to the heading, see the authority record for Sonny Bono.  He has a full 046, a sad 370 |a Detroit, Mich. |b South Lake Tahoe, Nev. (remember?), 374:: Singer|a Composer |a Politician, even a fancy new 510:: |i Group member of: |a Sonny & Cher |w r.  But no dates in the heading.  I expect it is because his file is large.  Changing his 100 would cause havoc for every library in the country.  For a person with a smaller file but a distinctive name, you may judge that the date(s) do not add value to the heading.

But there are many situations where you may want to add dates, particularly death dates, especially of very famous people.  LC had to give in and allow death dates for Princess Diana.  We’d probably hear from our patrons if we didn’t add Osama bin Laden’s death date.  Trust your judgment.
