The Energy and the Environment Research Laboratory (EERL) is looking for motivated Master of Engineering Students to work on two design projects.
Net Zero Building Energy Efficiency & Modeling for CornellNYC Tech campus
The first Academic Building on CornellNYC Tech campus will be Net Zero Energy. The tasks include: Analyzing the energy demand of the first Academic Building based on occupancy and space program; Improving the building performance by recommending energy efficient design measures; Collaborating on the review and evaluation of energy modeling conducted by ARUP, a consulting company (key task). The goal is to create the lowest energy demand appropriate for building program. Students will work closely with engineers at ARUP and Cornell Energy and Sustainability Office. The recommendations from this project will be considered to be implemented in the Academic Building.
Energy Efficiency Strategies at University of Hawaii-Hilo campus
EERL has been invited to develop strategies to reduce the energy consumption on UH-Hilo campus. Hawaii has the highest rate of electricity in the U.S. At the same time, there are abundant natural resources for clean energy generation. Furthermore, there are opportunities to improve the energy management. We will examine how the campus is using energy, model the main buildings on campus, and propose strategies to reduce their energy consumptions without compromising the quality of the academic environment. The team will present the final recommendations by traveling to Hawaii in May 2013.
Notes: Student must have taken MAE5010 or plan to take this course in Fall 2012. Prior experience with programing and/or energy modeling tools is desirable. Commitment to working for two semesters is required for both projects. Each project team will consist of a PhD student and 2-4 Master of Engineering students.
