Provost's International Research Internship Program (PIRIP)

  • PIRIP will be run as a special program through the School of Continuing Education and Summer Session.
  • No Continuing Education and Summer Session overhead fee will be charged to the participating students, departments, or colleges.
  • A Provost's tuition fellowship will be awarded, and an administrative fee charged, to each participating PIRIP student.
Student Eligibility and Approval to Participate in the Program
  • International visiting non-degree undergraduate and graduate students, who will be research interns at Cornell for a period of six months or less, are eligible to participate in the program.
  • Student research interns must be sponsored by a faculty member and their participation in the program approved by the sponsoring faculty, the department/school Chair/Director, and David Gries, Associate Dean. An approval form is attached and should be filled out and signed at the department/school level and then sent to David Gries (gries@cs.cornell.edu) for approval well in advance of the student's arrival on campus.
    Tuition Fellowship and Fee
  • All participating PIRIP students (both summer and academic semester) must register as "Regular Registrants" through Continuing Education and Summer Session and are not eligible to register as "Visitors Program" registrants as described on the Cornell Extramural Study Tuition and Fees web page (http://www.sce.cornell.edu/exmu/tuition.php).
  • All students receiving a research internship offer will receive a Provost's tuition fellowship and will pay an administrative fee based on the administrative fee calculation outlined below*.
*Administrative Fee Calculation: Participating undergraduate and graduate students will be assessed an administrative fee, set at 25% of the current extramural tuition rate (http://www.sce.cornell.edu/exmu/tuition.php) X 6 credits during the summer and X 12 credits during an academic semester. Undergraduate students must register for the designated credits. Graduate students may choose to register for fewer credits, but their administrative fee will still be based on 6 summer credits and 12 academic semester credits.

Example: The current extramural tuition rate is $970 per credit (subject to change at the discretion of Cornell Extramural Studies). Based on this tuition rate, the 08-09 fees would be:
Spring PIRIP 2009 Fee = $1010 X 25% X 12 credits = $2,910.00
Summer PIRIP 2009 Fee = $1010 X 25% X 6 credits = $1,455.0

Course Enrollment

  • All students participating in the program must register in an Independent Study Course through Continuing Education and Summer Session, the College, or the Graduate School:
  • Undergraduate students will register in a 400 level Summer Session Independent Study Course for 6 credits during the summer and in a restricted section of a department based 400 level Independent Study Course for 12 credits during an academic semester (Check with Duncan Bell, Engineering registrar regarding setting up an appropriate course section.). At the end of the internship a transcript will be provided to the student.
  • Graduate students will register in a 500 level Summer Session Independent Study Course (0-12 credits - variable) during the summer and through Extramural Studies or the Graduate School+ during an academic semester in a restricted section of a college/field based 500 level Independent Study Course (Check with Duncan Bell, Engineering registrar regarding setting up an appropriate course section.). At the end of the internship a transcript will be provided to the student.
  • articipating PIRIP students may not register in any other course work other than the Independent Study Courses described above.
    Admission to Cornell Not Implied
  • Admission to Cornell is not implied or guaranteed, but qualified participating students may choose to apply to Cornell graduate programs through the normal graduate admissions process.

Steps you Need to Take

  1. Submit a [PIRIP approval form|^PIRIP Approval Form.doc} for each visiting international student research intern that will participate in the program to David Gries via email (gries@cs.cornell.edu) or hard copy prior to the student's arrival on campus. An approved form will be returned to you.
  2. Submit the approved form to Continuing Education and Summer Session as soon as the signed form is returned to you.
  3. Have each international research intern register with Continuing Education and Summer Session in an appropriate level Independent Study Course. Undergraduate students must register for 6 credits during the summer and 12 credits during an academic semester.
