Floating Floc Meeting Minutes
Spring 2009 Minutes
March 13, 2009
Working Group: Bubbles
Accomplishments
- Wrote meeting minutes
- Midterm wiki
- Complete individual contribution pages
Metrics
- Ran experiments
- Spoke with Monroe
- Spoke with Len Lion about dissolved oxygen probe
Outcomes
- Found that DO probe is not working properly
- Gained a better understanding of how dissolved oxygen probe works
- Considering alternative solutions to floating floc problem
Issues
- DO probe definitely giving faulty data
- Data collected so far suggests this method may not work
Working Group: Sand Filter
Accomplishments
- Ran four experiments that vary in depth of sand and flow rate of water
- Obtained data that conflicts with previous data
Metrics
- Conflicts within data may be a result of the order in which the depth of the sand is changed
- The optimum flow rate is at 150 mL/min
Outcomes
- This week, the experiments showed that the higher the depth of sand, the better DO extraction performance is
- DO probe seems to be working because it shows a lower DO reading for the outflow than for the inflow (but needs to be calibrated each time an experiment is run)
Issues
- Possible solution is to let sand completely settle before running another experiment
- Should check that no bubbles are attached to the sand before running a new experiment
- Temperature probe jumps to 150 degrees C each time it is moved
