Introduction

PIV or Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an optical method used to measure velocities and related properties in fluids.

Challenges

  • High load of data input have led to computer crash.
  • The refraction of light due to the shape of the tube would skew the images captured.
  • The 2D images would not do justice on 3D environment of settling tube. Smaller flocs could hide behind bigger flocs and it would be difficult to do trajectory analysis.

Promising Tool!

  • Can observe settling velocities of high percentage of particles
  • Can filter particles by size and get particle size and velocity distributions
  • Should be able to build up statistics that we can relate to flocculation efficiency
  • Could complement turbidimeter as method of determining extent of flocculation
