Fall 2009 Contributions

This semester I have been working on the Flow Control Module team, specifically Linearization and Calibration. I have gone through the previous research and analyzed and modified the past MathCad files that were used for data analysis, looking at the equations that were developed over a year ago and how they manipulate the data. Also, I have been working on understanding the reports from last year to understand where the data-equation inconsistency was arising. Also, I have looked into the kinematic values of Alum and Chlorine and discussed with Honduras the difficulties that they are having in their plant. Also, information was obtained on the specifications for the module we need to crate to replicate the Honduran system so we can begin modifying parameters to find where the inconsistencies arose.

In the second half of the semester I completed gathering the material and measuring it so that it could be constructed into the flow control device that we used for our research. After testing the apparatus to make sure that it could handle the flow, making sure that all the tubes and bottles were in order, I begin testing out the system, starting by taking a few preliminary data points and re-calculating the volts to mL ratio for pure water, to make the flow rate calculations feasible. In addition to this, we began testing the inner diameters of the dosing tubes to verify their measurements and the volume of the tube. Also, we looked at flow rates through varying lengths of tube and plotted the data to look for discrepancies between the calculated and the experimental, which were apparent and also explainable due to the inner diameter calculations from earlier.
