Starting the pilot plant

(tick) Check with the operators to see if it is permissible to run the pilot plant.
(tick) Check that all the cords, including the power strips, are plugged in.
(tick) Check with the plant operators to make sure they haven't turned off parts of the Filtration Plant for maintenance. The operators are also very helpful in figuring out what might be unplugged or turned off.
(tick) If operating with PAC, ask the plant operators what they are using for their current PAC Dosing, it should be in the range of 8 to 30 ppm.

Starting the inlet pump

The inlet pump is the pump that moves water from the Cornell Water Filtration Plant's grit chamber (raw water) to the flocculation tank of the pilot plant. It can be started by plugging it in (plug is above the Water Filtration Plant's rapid mix chamber).

The level in the plant grit chamber rises and falls. Sometimes air gets caught in the pump line and blocks the flow. If the pump is not working or there is very low flow, release the trapped air by loosening the threads in the line located by the rapid mix.

Starting the alum pump

If the alum pump has been switched on, but no alum is flowing (i.e., the corresponding box in the process controller reads "0" mg/L):

  • Go to configuration in the process controller.
  • In the top left corner there are methods, files, etc. buttons, and an icon that looks like an open folder. Click on the folder.
  • Open the Fall 2008 folder (or a newer folder).
  • Open Sept 9 2008 (or any configuration that may have been saved later).

Changing the alum dose

  • Open process controller.
  • Go to the Configuration tab.
  • Click "Edit Rules."
  • In the menu on the left-and side, go to "alum dose not increment" and change the value.

OR...if operating the plant with PAC:

Configuring the pump to work with PAC

*Find the Methods file and load "PAC Dosing" method into Process Controller
*Go to the Configuration tab
*Click "Edit Rules"
*In the list on the left, change "PAC Ratio" to the correct decimal that corresponds with the dosing the plant operators are using (e.g. if they say 11 ppm, then you would put in .000011)
*Make sure "Tubing Size" is the correct number (if you are running PAC, the number should be 13)
*Change "Plant Flow Rate" to the correct Pilot Plant flow rate in ml/min
