As a member of the Depth vs. Surface Sand Filtration research team, I plan on studying the subsurface injection of raw water into the stacked rapid sand filter (SRSF). Our goal is to determine if depth filtration actually occurs in this process. We will support our theories about the type of filtration that occurs with experimental data obtained by setting up two SRSFs in parallel, one with subsurface injection and one without. We will compare the resulting turbidity readings for both systems and analyze the physical processes in each filter to explain the given results. We hope that through our research, we can reduce head loss and improve particle capture efficiency in water treatment plants.
